This was recently acquired from the estate of a wealthy man near where I grew up here in FL! I have spent hours researching and learning about this piece and still do not know much. However, this could possibly date to be extremely old. This statue does look and feel old. There is a lot of natural patina, which could be hiding a signature or mark since I could not locate one that would photograph. However, there are several remnants of what could have been marks at one time-some on the bottom and some on the back of the base. This piece is Extremely Heavy and could contain some consecrated ashes or other hidden treasures. This resembles Manjushri's Highest Form, known as Yamantaka or Vajrabhairava. Apparently there are several different depictions of this particular deity who is one of the main wrathful deities-in this case the wrathful form of Manjushri-the Buddha of Wisdom. These wrathful deities are meant to scare evil and were sent to conquer the worst aspects of ego. Yamantaka is known as the most powerful and was sent to conquer death-which was represented by Yama, the God of Death-which ends the cycle of death and re-birth. Yamantaka is also known as one of the Eight Dharampalas or Defenders of Buddhism. These are deities with the rank of Bodhisattva that are here to mercilessly wage war against the demons and enemies against Buddhism. This statue is Incredible! This piece was obviously crafted by a Master-down to the smallest of details! This statue stands about 7 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches at it's widest, and is about 3 1/2 inches at it's thickest! The statue is crafted on it's built in base which measures 1 1/4 inch tall, 4 1/4 wide, and is almost 2 inches thick! So all together this is 8 1/4 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches wide, and is over 3 inches thick! The base is reticulated all the way around the front and sides, while the back of the base is solid. Underneath, this looks like it was sealed properly in a Buddhist Tradition after calling in the spirit of the deity! Yamantaka has 7 heads-all with a Third Eye! The main head is that of a water buffalo-though I'm not positive since some things I read said it was a goat and others said bull. Above this is another depicting an angry Manjushri, while the others look to be quite peaceful Buddhas. Yamantaka has 12 arms: 2 grasping his consort, while the others hold various weapons and/or symbols! There are 2 four armed deities under each foot of Yamantaka. He is accompanied by his consort, and is shown in Tantric Yab-yum position. I read differing opinions of what female is depicted as his consort...some say Sarasavati and others say his sister?! Yamantaka is holding the four-faced decapitated head of Brahma in one of his hands. This is where I get confused-but fascinated and amazed all at once! This is a Tibetan Antique...but also known by many others like Japan, Mongolia, and India! After further research into Hindu and Buddhist traditions and teachings...Tantra is a practice used by all of these with some differences. After originating somewhere in India, Tantra spread to China, Tibet, and later Japan and Mongolia. Now it is even practiced here in the USA! So this particular deity has aspects from both Hindu and Buddhist Tantric practices! The yogi who meditates through the imagery of Yamantaka intends and hopes to develop a sense of identity strong enough to face down death, and the fear that accompanies death. Each head, each limb, each attribute, symbol and ornament of Yamantaka expresses the total mobilization of the faculties of enlightenment needed for this ultimate confrontation. This is in really good condition for it's age! There is some slight imperfections-where the metal has separated maybe? These are on the base: some on the reticulation, and a larger "whole" on the back of the base. This does not distract from the Awesomeness of this at all in my opinion. This is a Rare opportunity to witness this profound Rare work of art! In my research I was able to locate only a few-some in museums and almost all are very expensive due to it's rarity. I am honored to have this in my presence and hope you would be also! All serious offers will be considered! I could go on and on about this statue and the spiritual principles it represents so I am going to let the pictures say the rest!
