Description: Rare - Victorian sterling silver christening set 1850’s. With fabulous engraved detailing - think the design depicts Bacchus, Roman god of agriculture, wine & fertility. There is also a monogram on the pieces. Marks: Sheffield hallmark & date letter for 1855. You’ll see the cup has a double assay stamp for Sheffield (crown) quite rare I believe and an interesting point for collectors! Other marks include sterling silver, date letter for 1855, duty mark, maker’s mark - believed to be John Winter & Co (makers in business from the Georgian period) plus a design mark / early copyright stamp. Set comprises a cup / goblet , knife, fork & spoon & accompanying original box in leather, velvet & silk . Set has UK hallmarks. Condition: Please see photos - would note that these are taken without a lightbox so will show some reflections. Gilt interior worn a little to the cup and some signs of thinning to interior where it has been engraved. Nice original box but it’s very tired! Holding up shape but top & bottom separate and a hidden interior piece seems to have come loose. Silver hasn’t been polished in quite a few years so a little tarnish and typical age related wear for a piece of this age … but overall I would say it is doing well! Any queries - feel free to drop me a message! Selling off the rest of my collection of antique and vintage silver - most now listed, just a couple of bits to come :)
