RARE Antique Quack Medicine Buckhorn Mineral Water Bullock NC .5 Gallon Bottle

Description: -You are ordering this rare, empty / bottle and label only, quack medicine, antique, cylindrical, glass bottle with label, from the eastern NC estate of a collector of early NC items. More bottles will be listed in the near future. -Buckhorn Mineral Water, Bullock, Henderson County, North Carolina. -The label, and almost certainly the marketing arm of Buckhorn Lithia Water Co., made extravagant, and subsequently disproven, claims to be "Beneficial in the treatment of Catarrh of stomach and bowels, constipation and indigestion. It give relief in uric acid troubles, thick or discolored urine, stone in bladder, pain in urinating, kidney and bladder troubles, sciatica, rheumatism, and gout. It is recommended for women during period of gestation." -Company History: Had difficulty finding information on the origin or history of this company other than the University of NC - Chapel Hill having obtained and cataloged a similar condition label. There is also a great article from the National Library of Medicine dated July 21, 1919 where one hundred and sixty 1/2 gallon bottles and seven 5 gallon bottles were shipped across state lines to Virginia. The bottles were seized due to the at-that-time-new Food and Drug Act. The water was sampled from these bottles and found to be nothing more than normal water with zero active ingredients to support the fantastic, therapeutic claims on the label. The product was found to be false and fraudulent and with no one claiming them, they were destroyed by the United States Marshalls. -Bottle is approx 10.25" tall and 4.75" wide. Greenish-blue / Aqua tint to clear glass. Cylindrical with cork stopper opening. Embossed "1/2 GAL." under label. Label is marked, " H Gamse & Bro Litho Balto.
