Description: Here we have a RARE Antique, Laflin Mfg. Co., RODIER's 1879 Patented S-WAVY Sole Jack Smooth Plane !! Here is a little background on this plane as gleaned from PTAMPA Vol. 1, pages 183-185, and from 'The Superior Works' website. Louis Rodier received Patent No. 212,986 for his plane on March 4th, 1879. His patented planes were only manufactured by Laflin Manufacturing Co. of Westfield, Massachusetts for a few short years (1879-1882). Rodier's patented idea was to regulate the mouth and the set of the iron simultaneously and proportionately via a single adjustment. The planes have a spoked wheel adjuster that rocks the iron's bed about an axis near the throat; turning the wheel to the right reduces the iron's set by lowering the iron's pitch and consequently closes the throat, while turning the wheel to the left raises the iron's pitch to increase the iron's set and opens the throat. Rodier's planes have a real striking design to them. The sides of the plane are vertically 'corrugated' or 'fluted' to give them strength. But, the most striking feature of his planes are the sinuous ('S' Wavy) corrugations cast into the sole. All original examples of his planes have Walnut wood totes and knobs, with the occasional Mahogany examples showing up. They also have thick tapered single irons manufactured by BUCK BROTHERS. (additional info is available at the references noted above) This example of his 14.5"L Jack plane has all the attributes noted above with the Tote and beaded front knob being made of Walnut. It is in Very Good 'used tool' condition with repaired cracks in rear sidewall, performed by an earlier owner. The original japanning has wear from use. The frog mechanism works as it should. The full length, 2" wide cutting single iron by Buck Bros. is correct. It has the correct lever cap and tightening knob.
