Description: Georgian mixed cuts are so real, so deep, so characterful they keep you bewitched for hours. This superb quality brooch is made from cells of solid sterling silver, with a solid 15 carat gold back. I suspect a section from a genuine Georgian tiara or similar, with a Victorian added brooch backing in gold. Entirely hand made, each cell is a castellated tapering pyramid shape, topped with a sparkling white diamond of the period. Before the days of computer calculation and ‘perfect’ round diamonds, the diamond cutter was a real artist, skilled at working with extremely rare gems that were much more difficult to obtain than today. The early diamond cuts were created entirely by hand and each took many hours of patient work. The result is a unique, fascinating glimpse of history - each flash of light chosen by eye to get the most they could out of an unpredictable natural material. Each of these stones is different and tells its own beguiling story that travels through history. The brooch is wonderfully rounded, and would make a lovely tie pin or lapel brooch. My favourite aspect of this piece, aside from the charm of the stones, is just how deep the silver cells are - giving a real sense of movement and structure, it looks incredible from every angle. Measuring just over 2" long and 3 mm wide, it's around 6 mm thick! It dates to around 1740/50 and was remounted with the gold backing around 100 years later. It weighs in at an impressive 7.1 grams and is in wonderful condition throughout, with only the slightest signs of age.
