The Cuban Poster Gallery is delighted to offer NOSOTROS CONTRIBUIMOS ("WE CONTRIBUTE"), a metal plaque given to the volunteer teachers who contributed to Cuba's famed, island-wide 1961 literacy campaign. The plaque shows a blackboard, pencil and the letter "a," which stands for alfabetización, the Spanish word for literacy. The 5 1/2 by 4 inch plaque also lists the Cuban government agency that coordinated the eight-month campaign, the Comision Nacional de Alfabetización (National Literacy Commission). The letters ME in the lower right-hand corner stand for Ministerio de Educacion (Ministry of Education), which oversaw the commission. The literacy campaign brought worldwide attention to the then-two-year-old Cuban revolution. In April 1961, 27 months after the revolution had triumphed, the Fidel Castro-led government embarked on this campaign to abolish illiteracy on the island. The government dubbed 1961 “Year of Education” and dispatched “literacy brigades” into the countryside to train new teachers, build schools and teach the illiterate how to read and write. The United Nations hailed the campaign a resounding success that raised Cuba’s literacy rate from approximately 77 percent (before 1959) to nearly 100 percent. Some critics charged that while the campaign was successful the teaching methods used were top heavy with propaganda. Overall condition of this vintage plaque is good with some imperfections, such as scratches on the surface. The photos we have posted are representative of the plaque you will receive.
