Description: RARE 1918 Sixth Edition Dykes Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia Dykes Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia 1918 Sixth Edition All Original, Featuring an Electric Battery Car. A. L. Dyke was an early American automobile manufacturer based in St. Louis at the turn-of-the-century who also produced many volumes dedicated to the care and feeding of automobiles in general. His books truly are encyclopedic in their scope and they strived to keep up with the new and improved technology that automobile production became. Each year brought a new and revised edition so that the auto owner, the auto mechanic, and the auto manufacturer could always be up-to-date in this fast changing industry. Each Dyke's is full of illustrations, charts, schematics, exploded drawings, photos, definitions, explanations, instructions, and details both fine and grand: Dyke explains both how to start a Model T, and how to disassemble its engine… depending on your mood, and the amount of time you have, by following his instructions, you can do either. Steampunks listen up! Believe it or not, during this part of the automobile's technological development there were hybrid automobiles that ran on combined battery and gasoline power. There were also purely battery powered cars, steam powered cars, and coal driven cars. They are all covered here in detail. See the last photo for a drawing of a battery powered "electric car" from 1911. What goes around comes around, don't you just know it. It is interesting to note that by the late 1920s electric or battery powered automobiles were no longer a topic in Dyke's encyclopedia. By that time the unholy alliance between automobile and oil companies was firmly established and gasoline was the only viable fuel for automobiles. But that's a whole 'nother story....EARLY ELECTRIC CAR Portland Pandemoniumers Love to ReadAnd the Quirkier, the Better Mostly what you will find in our Book Nook Section are some of the Odd-Ball things that got published, regardless of their Quirkiness.
