THIS IS FOR THE 12th CAVALRY, M TROOP AND 50TH TROOPER. THE 12TH CAVALRY WAS FORMED IN 1901 IN TEXAS. THIS GIRTH WOULD BE PERFECTLY CORRECT FOR THE 1904 FIRST PATTERN McCLELLAN SADDLE WITH THE GODFREY RECTANGULAR SAFES OR WOULD ALSO BE CORRECT FOR THE SECOND PATTERN WITH ROUND SAFE.EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THIS GIRTH. THE HORSE HAIR IS EXCELLENT SHOWING LITTLE FIELD USE. THE LEATHER SAFES ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH MINOR DEFORMATION FROM USE. THE LEATHER IS SOUND, STRONG STITCHING. THE RINGS HAVE LIGHT RUST. THE LEATHER SAFES ARE MOSTLY MEDIUM BROWN.A RARE, EXCELLENT AND TRANSITIONAL GIRTH PROBABLY MADE RIGHT AROUND 1903 OR EARLY 1904 WHEN THE US CAVALRY WENT FROM BLACK LEATHER TO RUSSET COLOR BUT BEFORE THE ADOPTION OF THE 1904 GIRTH WITH A TOP REINFORCING RIVET ON THE TOP.
