Description: Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION: One of a kind Antique American Folk Art. This is a RARE 1870s Ornamental Penmanship Specimen Sampler. Original frame and backing. Has original Newspaper from 1874 Chicago which dates this piece (pics #9, #10, and #11). Newspaper is dated to July 2, 1874 (pic #9). This Penmanship sampler was made by William W. Bass in 1874 (possibly a little earlier as that is when it was finished and framed). It features the title " Specimen of Ornamental Penmanship" written in different styles. There are 2 doves near the top. At the bottom is an American eagle with shield above the name. There are many words names written in different style that have been dot glued in place. There is a goose, hen, and turkey also glued in place with fancy pen names. All specimens are old and period . You can see the shadows in the paper where they have been for over 125 years. When we purchased this it had never been out of the frame, but the glass was cracked and pieces of glass were lacking. We replaced the glass. Condition is good for age. The frame has scuffing. The paper has discolored over the years. There are light water mark staining near the top. Possibly some penmanship samples are lacking where once glued in place. Glass replaced. We left the Chicago Newspaper in the backing behind the backboard as it has always been. This has a great folk at look. These old American Ornamental Penmanship Samplers are quite scarce. Measures about 19" by 16" (including frame). First picture is closest to true color. Shipping total includes shipping, insurance, and signature confirmation. BID WITH CONFIDENCE .
