Description: RARE 17th Century Botanical Engraving #32 By Dutch Willem de Passe #32 L. Tulipa. I found this print after much research- The engraver is Willem de Passe son of Crispijn Van de Passe. A bit of background: Artist associated with 175 portraits The son of Dutch engraver and publisher Crispijn Van de Passe the Elder and the brother of engraver Simon. His father was the founder of a publishing house in Cologne that produced portraits of European nobility and other prints. The family were forced to leave Cologne because of their Anabaptist faith. They moved to Utrecht, and in 1616 Simon settled in London where he established a successful portrait engraving practice. Willem joined him in 1621, and produced a total of seventeen portraits of princes and noblemen, most of them after life. These included a double portrait of James I and Charles, Frederick of Bohemia and his family, and the family of James I. The only thing I can see is what is shown in the pictures. The print appears to be watercolor. Measurements: Art 16” X 10.75” Frame 23.5” X 16.5” X 1” - frame is gold under worming looking black. Matting is a beautiful fabric possibly silk plaid Weight 4 pounds and 3.1 ounces Condition is Preowned vintage - unfortunately I do not more than was shared.
