APRIL 10, 1865 Description: Printed paper, 2 3/4 x 7 1.8", with decoration of printer's flowers are the left end; printed "Paroled Prisoner's Pass" and "Appomattox Court House, Va."; the parole has a printed date of April 10th, 1865, the day after General Lee asked to discuss the terms of surrender. On this day Parole Passes were printed in the Clover Hill Tavern.~~This Parole was issued to Quartermaster Jos. E. Spotswood, of Co. 12th Regt. of Virginia Infantry. It is signed by R[ichard] W. Jones, .Major, one to the field commanders of the 12th Virgnia Infantry.~~Before the war, Joseph Spotswood was a clerk in a Petersburg lumber dealer's concern. In April 1861 he enlisted in Company B and trasferred soon after to Company E. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, one of only three men present at that battle from his company. From December 1862 through July 1863 he was "detached to enroll conscripts" -- presumably on light duty due to his wound -- but he returned to be promoted Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in Sepember 1863. He was present at the surrender at Appomattox and is buried in Petersburg's Blandford Cemetery.~~Paroles issued at Appomattox are especially desirable.~~The parole is nicely, and archivally, framed.
