QUEEN VICTORIA (GREAT BRITAIN) - MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED 04/19/1862 CO-SIGNED BY: 1ST MARQUESS OF RIPON (GEORGE F. S. ROBINSON) - HFSID 166719 QUEEN VICTORIA Appointment of a Second Captain of a Company in the Corps of Royal Engineers, also signed by the Under Secretary of State for War, the Earl de Grey and Ripon (later the Marquess of Ripon). Military Appointment signed: "Victoria Reg" as Queen of the United Kingdom. Also signed "de Grey & Ripon" as Under Secretary of State for War. 1 page, 16x12. St. James Court, London, England. 1862 April 19. Appointment of William Edmund to Second Captain of a Company in the Corps of Royal Engineers. QUEEN VICTORIA (1819-1901), the last member of the House of Hanover to reign (from 1837) as a British monarch, ruled the United Kingdom longer than any other monarch before or since. Her 63-year reign endeared her to her subjects, and she gave her name to an era, the Victorian Age. Until the very end of her reign, when the rising powers of Germany and the United States began to challenge its primacy, Victoria's British Empire was incontestably the world's greatest economic and military power. Her Husband, Prince Albert, an able political figure himself, was the Queen's close advisor until his death in 1861. The royal pair had nine children - four sons and five daughters. Victoria's reign was celebrated with two jubilees, honoring her 50 and 60 years on the throne. GEORGE F.S. ROBINSON became DE GREY AND RIPON when he succeeded his father as Earl of Ripon and his uncle as Earl de Grey in 1859. He was elevated to FIRST MARQUESS OF RIPON in 1873, after serving as Chairman of the US/British commission which resolved the Alabama Claims (over damage inflicted by Confederate raiders built in Britain during the US Civil War). Still an Under Secretary when he signed this commission, de Grey and Ripon was elevated to Secretary in 1863. He later became Lord President of the Council in Gladstone's first administration (1868-1873). As Marquess of Ripon, he was Governor General of India (1880-1884) and became 1st Lord of Admiralty in 1886. He ended his career as Liberal Leader in the House of Lords. His birth address is distinctive: #10 Downing Street. (His father, F. J. Robinson, later the Earl of Ripon, was Prime Minister.) Creased and toned. Edges and corners worn with small tears. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: QUEEN VICTORIA (GREAT BRITAIN) 1ST MARQUESS OF RIPON See more listings in our ROYALTY (410) category.
