By taking the time to practice you can achieve satisfactory results. Practice, practice, practice off the vehicle before applying a tri-coat to your vehicle. It is best to practice and test using the included spray-out card. Make sure to get the primer sanded very smooth before applying the ground coat. For best results, the primer should be wet or dry sanded with 600 grit before applying the ground-coat. To begin the tri-coat application, first, apply the ground-coat to your prepared surface. This is the main color coat. Make sure to apply enough ground-coat to thoroughly cover your primer/repair area (normally about 3 coats.) You also need to be sure that the ground-coat has thoroughly dried before proceeding to the next step. Next, apply the mid-coat layer. It is best to overlap each coat of mid-coat and extend the edge of each successive coat slightly past the last in order to “blend” the new color into the old. The mid-coat or pearl-coat is a very transparent carrier coat which contains flakes of pearls which creates the tri-coat color effect. The mid-coat goes on very thinly and is almost transparent. Again, you must practice a bit to get it right. The real trick is applying the mid-coat over the ground-coat to achieve the correct color. Again, it is critical to practice on the let-down panel(s) in order to understand how many coats of pearl mid-coat will be needed. Apply too little mid-coat, and the basecoat won't be changed enough; apply too much, and you will change the basecoat color too much and have to start over again. Finally, apply 2-3 medium wet coats of clearcoat to the entire repaired panel. Polish the cured clear-coat if needed.
