Released in 1974, the SX-424 is perfect for those who prefer quality over volume. It retailed for $200, that's almost $1,500 today!In a handsome package of quality circuitry and reasonable price, the SX-424 offers very sensitive FM reception a wide linear type dial scale for fine FM tuning, and highly respectable specifications both for the FM tuner section and the audio section. It's versatile unit, too because you can use it with almost all music sources available today, including records, tape, FM and microphone. Best of all it's Pioneer made, which means that, for its price, there is probably nothing available today that can compare with its quality. This classic receiver has two speaker zones and both Headphone & Mic jacks on the front panel. The tuning dial is complemented with a Stereo indicator lamp and Tuning meter. In addition to the Speaker & Function selectors, it has click-stop Bass & Treble controls and a split Volume for right & left channels, and there are buttons for Stereo/Mono, Tape Monitor and a Loudness button that contours the sound perfectly for low level listening. While the manual gives this a "Music Power" rating of 50 watts @ 4Ω, we prefer to use the more reasonable "Continuous Power" rating of 24 Watts, 12 W/Ch into 8Ω, or 26 Watts, 13 W/Ch into 4Ω through full spectrum with both channels driven. Remember, these are what audiophiles call "Vintage Watts," from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!The rear panel offers two speaker zones, an Aux Input, a Tape Loop with the REC/PB DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era, and a stereo Phono Input with a grounding post for your turntables! It also has two AC outlets, switched & unswitched, and user-access to the power & protection fuses. It weighs in at over 17 lbs and measures 17" x 13" x 5.5" tall! NOTE: This receiver uses Pioneers speaker connectors for connecting your speakers to the custom speaker jacks. We are including the pictured pair for using the main speaker outputs, you will need an additional set to use the second speaker outputs. They are available from multiple eBay sellers. Condition:This beautiful receiver is in "Very Good" condition with minor signs of use and a nice, clean front panel! Aside from a few light scuffs to the veneer, the only thing worth mentioning are just a few light front panel scuffs, most too faint to make out well in the pics. All knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna & AC cord. The manual has gone missing, but no worries, it's available online or we will send you the PDF file directly on request. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is included. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was working just some scratchy controls and a few lamps out, so as with all vintage receivers it went to our tech for servicing. First, Pioneer used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years. So, even though they were still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future. A total of 10 transistors were upgraded to brand new Onsemi parts, never any used or NOS components! Just a few lamps were out, but as the rest were most likely going to fail soon all the dial lamps were replaced with long-life LED's! We installed the new frosted Cool White LED's we sourced in the dial which shine through the blue dial with better consistently, then a Green LED was chosen for the meter that contrast the dial beautifully. But if you prefer the original Warm White meter color that shines through blue just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Even the Stereo indicator and hard to replace pointer lamp were upgraded so you won't have to worry about them ever again. In fact, we weren't happy with the lack of illumination the unidirectional LED's give on these pointers, others just resort to using an incandescent. But as longevity is the whole idea behind the LED upgrade, our tech has come up with a custom way to install a 1-segment LED that illuminates the pointer much better. It's this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacementThe exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailedWhile the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced. We are in a remote area so we did need to use the included antenna to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp.
