Fossil remains of the Plesiosaurus were first discovered in the early 19th century by the fossil collector and paleontologist Mary Anning near the British Lyme Regis. Plesiosaurs populated the earth until the final phase of the Cretaceous and could reach a body length of up to 15 meters.
