Description: Very nice original 1911 Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Marksman Medal! This medal does not have the top bar but does retain the original ribbon.. the condition of the medal itself is excellent. The ribbon is tattered and worn but is soldi and original , it is split at the top where the the bar I'm sure tore through it! The medal is solid bronze and was produced by the Hayes Brothers Company.. These were awarded by the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia dating back in various forms to the early 1800s , after the Civil War they become more specific patterns and designs and not jeweler made like before.. the MVM changed the designs of these medals every 5 years or so which meant less ladder badges and instead a large variety of different badges, patterns and designs! They really are fun to collect and there is so much variation and variety out there! Currently this is my only MVM offering though I do have similar period NY National guard medals check those out! There is a great publication about these medals called MVM Massachusetts Volunteer Militia A Pictoral History Marksmanship Awards of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. There are 2 volumes this medal is in volume 2.. Thanks for looking please check out my other medals & militaria offering!
