Description: Pre-Columbian Aztec Zapotec Anthropomorphic Polychromed Clay Pipe Meso-American Pre-Columbian Aztec or Zapotec Anthropomorphic Polychromed and Incised Clay Pipe Meso-American This is a Pre-Columbian Aztec or Zapotec Anthropomorphic Polychromed and Incised Clay Pipe. This Meso-American Pipe is from circa 1400-1500, but could be earlier. I found this to be very difficult to date as there are very few located in museums. The pipe has a long stem with green painted meander-like geometric design and the base of the pipe appears to be a human form sitting with one leg stretched out (the pipe stem) and one folded leg and arms naturalistically positioned with smoke coming out of a "vessel" or basket on the back of the human figure. The basket is also painted red and incised. ***Please be aware that this is an ancient work of art and is quite fragile, as such the wear and tear is normal and part of the age.*** PROVENANCE: Purchased at Studio City (Los Angeles, CA) estate. This estate had several African, pre-Columbian and Asian ethnographic artifacts. Condition:Condition is commensurate with age and use. Very good condition, nice aged patina, green paint is quite bright with a nice aged sheen. The stem of the pipe has been repaired and is visible in the photos.
