Description: Papaver Rhoeas: Many sultry, smoky shades of silver, grey and lavender grace the long sought-after Amazing Grey Shirley poppy. Some flowers have a white picotee edge, others have a subtle rosy glow in the center. Each ruffled flower has a chocolate eye and once plants begin blooming in May, they produce dozens of flowers. Grown from seed, each plant is slightly different in tone and texture. Crinkled, airy, 2-3 in. semi-double and single blooms appear by the dozen on 18-36 in. tall plants. Popular with bees and butterflies. Plants can get to 30” tall and 24” wide in short order but start blooming before fully grown. After blooms drop, they leave behind adorable, chocolate-capped seed pods. Perfect for a porch container or for spicing up a dry garden bed. They make quite a show when planted in drifts. Prefers humus-rich well-drained soil and lots of sun. Makes a great cut flower. Deadhead to extend blooming. Self-seeds.Direct sow Shirley poppies into prepared seed beds that have been cleared of weeds and have had the top 1 in. of soil loosened. Rake seed in. Press into soil by walking over the area. Can start indoors in 2 in. containers.
