Description: Pilgerodendron Uviferum is a temperate conifer native to the Valdivian Temperate Rainforests and Magellanic Polar Forests of Chile. It is a member of the Cupressaceae family and like Fitzroya is a member of the Callitroideae subfamily. The Callitroideae have a Southern hemisphere distribution and are believed to be relicts of the ancient Antarctic flora. Occurring down to Tierra del Fuego, Pilgerodendron is the Southernmost conifer in the world. Listed for sale are 5 seeds of this rare and beautiful plant. I am currently stratifying the seeds before their sale, but recommend any buyers continue stratifying them for >3 weeks before planting the seeds. This tree prefers cool, moist climates and is hardy down to zone 7a [perhaps even 6b], making it especially hardy for a Southern hemisphere conifer. This conifer will likely be happiest from coastal northern CA up through coastal Alaska, as it reportedly likes cool summers and like many conifers is susceptible to fungal infections (phytophora) in warm, humid weather. There are likely other micro-climates in the coastal Northeast (e.g. Cape Cod), at higher elevations, etc. where it would be worth testing this species, as it has been cultivated in the US to a very limited extent.
