Illustration from Les Roses by Pierre-Joseph Redoute. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), the Belgian painter and botanist, is the most widely-known of all the flower painters. Redouté perfected the stipple engraving technique and employed it in his more than 2,100 published plates depicting over 1,800 species, many of which had never before been rendered. As the official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and later under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, Redouté's career flourished, and his works reached a large and prosperous audience. Redouté's most popular and highly-praised works were those collected in Les Roses and Les Liliacées. Les Roses was a 3-volume publication, 1817-24. The draftmanship of Redouté was both elegant and botanically accurate; for most viewers he had captured the rose. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
