No.3 PLAYED BY MYRA HESS PLAYED BY MYRA HESS RARE COMPOSER ROLL RECORDINGKarol Maciej Szymanowski . POLISH COMPOSERKarol Maciej Szymanowski ( 3 October 1882 – 29 March 1937) was a Polish composer and pianist. He was a member of the modernist Young Poland movement that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century.Szymanowski's early works show the influence of the late Romantic German school as well as the early works of Alexander Scriabin, as exemplified by his Étude Op. 4 No. 3 and his first two symphonies. Later, he developed an impressionistic and partially atonal style, represented by such works as the Third Symphony and his Violin Concerto No. 1. His third period was influenced by the folk music of the Polish Górale people, including the ballet Harnasie, the Fourth Symphony, and his sets of Mazurkas for piano. King Roger, composed between 1918 and 1924, remains Szymanowski's most popular opera. His other significant works include Hagith, Symphony No. 2, The Love Songs of Hafiz, and Stabat Mater. Szymanowski was awarded the highest national honors, including the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland and other distinctions, both Polish and foreign PLAYED MYRA HESS One of Great Britain’s most famous classical pianists, Dame Myra Hess had the idea of setting up lunchtime concerts at London’s National Gallery during the Second World War to boost the low morale of Londoners. The success of the National Gallery concerts made Hess an international star, though she preferred to perform in smaller concert halls. She had a complicated relationship with Judaism; she rejected the Orthodox tradition of her father’s family and was drawn to American Episcopalian teachings, though she never converted for fear of being perceived as a deserter by her fellow Jews. The Honor of Dame of the British Empire was conferred upon Hess in 1941. 88 NOTE Aeolian Hand-Played Rolls Full Scale Themodist rolls produced in London UK by the AEOLIAN COMPANY These quality hand-played rolls had much more information recorded on them than arranged rolls. They were recorded using a perforating machine that was connected to a piano Many famous pianist would sit at the piano and "hand-play" a piece of music, and the connected machine would record that pianist's performance onto a piano roll. A roll editor or producer would note dynamic and sometimes tempo changes from the recorded performance, and then print these changes onto the perforated roll. This master roll with markings as well as perforations would then be copied and sold, often marketed with the performing pianist's name attached. Player pianists could purchase the roll and perform it themselves, using either their own interpretation of the music, or the recording pianist's interpretations as marked. ROLL No A649This rare roll recording is in good used condition, the roll box is well used with scuffs. See images This roll produced in London UK by the AEOLIAN COMPANY
