Description: Photograph Notes: Reckoning from east to west, this is the last of a series of vaults and enclosures ranged along the southern boundary wall of the kirkyard. See [[3563240]] for context; the edge of the Buchanan Vault can be seen at the far right in that picture. At the upper-left corner of the present picture is part of a [[6150569]]. The first Buchanan of Ardoch was William Buchanan, to whom the lands of Ardoch (in the vicinity of [[NS4186]]) were feued out in 1683 by William Cochran of Kilmaronock (on whom, see [[1058768]]). The Buchanans of Ardoch at one time held the lands of Balloch (see [[3633022]]), which later passed to the Dennistoun Browns; appropriately, the [[3565913]] is immediately next to this one (it is on the left, with iron railings). The vault is well preserved, and there are several tablets inside. High on the back wall is one which specifies (in Latin) that this is the family burial place of Buchanan of Ardoch, and which gives an indication of when the vault was built: the inscription is "Sep. Fam. Buchanan de Ardoch / 1808". As I note elsewhere ([[3563425]]), some of the structures here on the southern boundary wall of the kirkyard pre-date the present church building itself. Amongst those commemorated on other tablets within it are Elizabeth Parkes Buchanan (30 Aug 1807 20 Mar 1867), and Thomas John Buchanan (Late Lieutenant 52nd Reg Light Infantry), only son of John Buchanan of Ardoch. John Buchanan of Ardoch allowed almost unrestricted access to his Balloch Estates. He would often stop to talk with visitors, some of whom would even be invited to the castle to take a dram with him. John at one time entertained Sir Walter Scott at Balloch Castle, and took him out sailing on Loch Lomond. Scott surprised the locals with his detailed knowledge of the loch; unknown to them, he had become well acquainted with it in the course of his frequent visits to Ross Priory ([[NS4187]]).www Copyright Lairich Rig and licensed for reuse under creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0 details available here: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ Search our eBay Shop for other Photos Click Here Postage & Packing: All items are posted securely packaged with card inserts to avoid damage in the post hence the higher postage cost than the standard cost of a 1st / 2nd class stamp.
