Description: Photograph Notes: Not many people remember that the British Grand Prix was held on a purpose built circuit at Aintree for many years in the 1950s and 60s. It was based on the horse racing course, providing more use for the facilities such as stands, scoreboards, and food suppliers. The Anchor Crossing was a complex junction, with the circuit joining the course of a public road that ran across the site, and at almost the same point crossing the horse racing track. I think turf is laid over the road when the horses are racing. The 1961 event was held largely in pouring rain. In this photo Bonniers Porsche leads another car, possibly a BRP. Fortunately history tells us the exact date of the photo. You can see here how close the track was/is to streets of houses. Also note the complete lack of any protective structures between the cars and the officials, photographers and crowd. Can anyone explain the complex set of tall posts at this point? Or the weird TV aerial on the right hand house?
