Description: This is a letter by Thomas Cogswell Upham (1799-1872), an American philosopher, psychologist, pacifist, poet, author, and educator. He was an important figure in the Holiness movement. Upham served as the Bowdoin College professor of mental and moral philosophy from 1825 to 1868. Upham's most popular work, Mental Philosophy, received 57 editions over a 73-year period. Additionally, he wrote more than a dozen other books, including the first treatise on abnormal psychology. Upham had an influential relationship with Harriet Beecher Stowe. Upham and Stowe frequently debated the abolitionist cause. Upham was sympathetic to the anti-slavery cause, but he believed that maintaining peace and obeying the law were more important. The letter is dated March 24, 1856. In the letter, Upham is answering a requestfor his autograph. The letter is handwritten on a 4" by 5" piece of light blue paper that has been glued to aslightly larger piece of thicker paper. The letter reads as follows: Brunswick, Maine, March 24, 1856Mr. P.E. Williams. Dear Sir, I have nohesitation in complying with yourrequest. It is true, I am at a lossto understand why persons shouldattach any special value to my signature.But that I must leave to others todecide.
