The Stamp reads- "Portfolio Pfaltzgraff - Made in USA - Naturewood " The History of Pfaltzgraff Johann George Pfaltzgraff was born in Germany in the early 1800's. he learned the potter's trade, but because of the restrictive guild situation he had trouble establishing himself. So, he & his new bride Elenora decided to emigrate to Pennsylvania. Johann & Elenora boarded the Brig Charles Ferdinand in Germany in May of 1833 & arrived in Baltimore, Maryland almost four months later. By 1838 they had established themselves in Conewago in York County. Joann was aware of the needs of the local farmers & began producing pitchers, plates & mugs in order to meet domestic needs. He also produced storage vessels like crocks, jugs & jars, which were needed for food storage & preservation. As Johann & Eleonora's family grew he taught his craft to his son's John, Henry, George, Cornelius & Isaac. Later John, Henry & George made names for themselves as highly skilled potters. Upon Johann's death in 1873, his land was divided among his widow & their children (ten in all). The five sons John, George, Cornelius, Henry & Isaac, would continue as potters. As the Pfaltzgraff brothers expanded their potteries & business horizons, in the nineteenth century industrial revolution, which was changing the United States from a farm-based society to an urban, manufacturing-driven economy. So, in 1889 George & Henry Pfaltzgraff created a partnership that would grow into the Pfaltzgraff Company. The company was called "The Pfaltzgraff Stoneware Co." The following year the brothers constructed a three-story plant next to a railroad near the western outskirts of York City, in south central Pennsylvania. This factory burned to the ground in 1906. The Pfaltzgraff's continued to produce pottery & in 2005 joined the family of "Lifetime Brands, Inc".
