The die cast hoops have been replaced with triple flanged hoops to give the drum a more "open" sound. Its 14" x 5" shell is 4 plies of maple over 4 inner plies of birch. The top bearing edge is fully rounded, which lets the head seat firmly. The snare bed is borrowed from Pearl's expensive Philharmonic snares, which feature flat snare beds around the snare wires. This gives you warm tone & very quick response. It’s quite noticeable when playing ghost notes on this snare. The lacquer finish is "Smoke Flake"& this is the only drum Pearl has crafted to bear the color. The sparkle looks great in person. In my opinion, this snare has heavy overtones and sounds a bit more like a metal shell snare.
