Description: Past Patterns PP#0032US ARMY ISSUE ARTILLERY COAT PATTERNSizes 9-12 (chest size 50"-56")from Federalist Era (1789-1829) This shell pattern may be used for military patterns circa 1796-1809. This includes patterns for the Lewis and Clark bicentennial celebrations. The pattern is based on U.S. Army correspondence between 1803-1805 from the National Archives as well as garments and drafting systems. The pattern contains historical notes by Robert G. Stone describing the 1804 artillery coat as well as how to adapt the pattern for use in making a Lewis and Clark private's coat. The pattern also contains illustrated instructions for hand stitches that are typical of early 19th century tailoring. Saundra Ros Altman wrote and illustrated the sewing and fitting instructions. We do this with the hope that people will start creating and wearing reproductions instead of antique originals. The clothes we wear and that our grandparents wore are part of our cultural history. Just as you would not abuse antiques furniture by cutting off decorative trim, so you should not abuse antique garments by wearing them. Our second goal is that you pick up a little bit of history when you sew the garment. The fit, the cut, the fasteners, the fabric design, just to mention a few things, are part to the technology of the time. Our third goal, in sewing the patterns, is to spark an interest in genealogy and local history. Researching local history is always a rewarding pursuit. SKU PP#0032sz09-12 Thanks for looking!
