Frane The Monitor 5 loudspeaker fits right in the middle of Paradigm's Monitor series, which ranges from the Mini monitor to the Monitor 9 model. The 5 is a floor standing, two-way tower design that measures 32.25" H x 10.75" D x 7.75" W, and weighs 32 pounds per enclosure. The review pair was finished in simulated black ash over 0.75" medium density fiberboard (MDF) with very good fit and finish. The front baffle is black except for the top 20.75", which is light gray. When this gray area is covered by the grille, the entire enclosure is black. Synthetic fiber fill is used in the enclosure. There are also glued-in-place internal panel stiffeners. The 0.75" titanium dome tweeter is located nearly 30" above the floor on the front baffle. The tweeter coil gap is filled with Ferro fluid for damping. There is a wave guide just in front of the dome to control high frequency dispersion. Directly below the tweeter is a 6.5" semi-transparent polypropylene midrange-woofer with die cast basket. The rim of this driver is fastened to the baffle with eight screws in pairs around the rim instead of the usual four screws. The midrange-woofer's butyl suspension is progressively damped to improve cone control. Below this driver is a 2" diameter by 3" long-vent with flared ends to smooth the air flow. The drivers and vent are all on the vertical center line of the front baffle. The removable grilles comprise a 0.25" thick MDF sheet with black double knit cloth covering. They are held to the cabinet with short posts that insert into plastic grommets set into the front baffle. Cutouts in the MDF match the drivers and port opening, and the tweeter section of the cutout is flared outward to minimize sound diffraction. Speaker connection is via gold-plated binding posts set into a plastic cup low on the back baffle. There are two pairs of binding posts linked with removable gold-plated straps to permit bi-wiring or bi-amplification. The straps link the high frequency section of the crossover with the midrange-woofer section. When the speakers are bi-wired or bi-amplified, the metal straps between the posts are removed to separate the two sections of the crossover. The binding posts are angled upward for ease of access and are spaced to permit using standard dual banana plugs.
