The artwork depicts an ancient Palauan Legend: Bersoech (Serpent) of Chelechui In days long past, in the village of Chelechui, there came a great and terrible Bersoech or serpent, a creature of shadow and flame, whose hunger knew no bounds. Drawn by the flicker of firelight, it slithered forth from the depths of the earth, and wherever the villagers kindled flame to cook their humble meals, there too would the beast appear, devouring both fire and flesh alike. So great was its terror that the people, in dread and despair, fled from their homes, abandoning their hearths to the beast. Yet, in their haste to escape the serpent’s wrath, they left behind one: an old woman, bent with age, whose frail steps could not keep pace with the fleeing throng. Alone she remained in the desolate village, with naught but the memory of her people and the fearsome serpent that haunted the place. But lo, in the passing of time, a wonder befell her. Though childless for many years, she conceived, and in time brought forth a son. As the boy grew, so too did his spirit, bold and unyielding as the mountain winds. And though he lived upon raw food, bereft of flame, he was filled with questions. “Mother,” he asked one day, “why do we eat of uncooked fare, while the flame lies cold in our hearth?” With sorrow and trembling, the old woman told him of the serpent, the dread Bersoech, and how it came at the smell of fire to feast upon the villagers, devouring all who stood before it. Hearing this, the boy’s heart burned with resolve. He spoke no word more, but set about his task, forging a plan within the quiet depths of his mind. On a dark night, beneath a sky heavy with stars, he kindled a fire—bold and bright it burned, and the boy worked quickly, heating great stones until they glowed red with the heat of his flame. The serpent, as it always did, rose from the deep and coiled toward the blaze, its hunger sharp and unquenchable. With cunning and courage, the boy stood firm. As the beast opened wide its maw to consume him, he seized the burning stones and hurled them into the serpent’s gaping throat. A great cry split the night as the serpent writhed in agony, choking upon the very fire it had sought to devour. And at last, it was still. Thus, the serpent was slain, and the curse that had hung over Chelechui was broken. The villagers, hearing of the boy’s brave deed, returned from their exile to the village they had forsaken. And there, upon the ground where the battle was fought, the stones still lie—silent witness to the victory of a humble boy over a monster of legend. So ends the tale of the serpent of Chelechui, and how courage, though born of the smallest flame, may yet drive back the darkest of shadows. Approximate size is 9” x 14” at longest points.
