Description: This stately 2-gallon Alexandria Merchant jug was made by famed potter B.C Milburn for the merchant Elisha Janney Miller, ca. 1865-1876. It has a nice gray and brown salt glaze with the natural clay color showing through in patches where the glaze was thin. The clay is a mixture of the red/brown of old brick and gray. The applied handle is gray clay. It has a clear impressed stamp "2/EJ Miller/ Alex. Va." on the shoulder above an incised line. The wide, applied strap handle has a small 1/8" chip but the jug has no other chips, no cracks, and no restorations. This stately, well-thrown jug has a perfectly symmetrical form and stands 12.5" ht. by 8.5" d. and weighs 10 lbs. 6 oz. Elisha J Miller and his father, Robert Miller, were partners in a mercantile business and part of a prominent family of abolitionists that date to before the colonies united as a single nation and were instrumental in founding one of the first neighborhoods for Free Blacks, (Hay-ti), est. 1804, in Alexandria, Virginia. E.J.'s father, R. H. Miller, bought slaves to purchase their freedom and he bought property and built houses to sell to any free blacks. E.J. Miller ordered stoneware for the Miller Mercantile from B.C. Wilburn, another prominent abolitionist family when Virginia was still a colony, before 1776. Owning a great, signed, glazed stoneware jug ca.1865 to 1876 that both the maker and seller were from well-known pre-Revolutionary War abolitionist families gives this piece a certain cache and makes it a great collectible for those with an interest in early southern stoneware, as well as American History and early Black American History. Historical aspects aside, this antique Virginia salt glazed jug has an is in wonderful condition and has a warmth to it, a certain “presence” that most early stoneware lacks. It would be a great addition to a collection or outstanding standalone piece. Collecting antique stoneware has become more popular with pieces being found in barns, old houses, cellars and at estate sales but most stoneware coming onto the market is damaged, cracked or repaired but beyond the handle chip, this piece is a gem!
