Description: Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. Dodd, Mead & Company, 1942. Hardcover; gilt illustration on front, gilt lettering on spine; 247 numbered pages; approx. 8¼” x 5¾”. Possible unstated first edition. Bonus #1: most of the original dust jacket. Bonus #2: a fun bookplate from the original owner, Marcia (Anderson) Goates (1921-2002). Fun illustrations on front and scattered through the story, by Constantin Alajálov (1900-1987), an Armenian-American painter and illustrator. Cornelia Otis Skinner (1899-1979) was an American actor and author. Emily Kimbrough (1899-1989) was an American author and journalist. The two had been friends in their youth, and this book is an account of their trip to Europe in the early 1920’s, following their college graduations. This best-selling book was the basis of a 1944 film of the same name, a 3-act comedy play by Jean Kerr (1946), a television show (1950) later retitled The Girls, and a 2-act musical comedy in 1960. Their adventure also overlaps with the “Lost Generation” crowd of American ex-pats and others in Paris in the 1920's. None of those better-known persons "show up" in the book, but it offers an amusing alternate view of the time and place. (Because language changes via common usage, and the definitions of words change as well, we should note: “gay” in their chosen title, at the time, meant “free-spirited,” “adventurous,” and usually “happy.”) Book condition is “good” or a bit better: boards and spine are straight and square; binding is solid, with everything securely intact; no marks in or out; gilt on front and spine is only slightly faded; some external wear, but not bad; light stain on page 211 that appears to have been coffee.
