Description: The Gallipoli Star is an Ottoman Empire Medal known in Germany and Austria as the Iron Crescent which was authorized by Sultan Mehmed V on March 1, 1915 and consists of one class. It was awarded to members of the Ottoman Empire and its allies. The Turkish order was of poor quality. Germany had a large Army in the Ottoman Empire led by General Liman von Sanders who was made a Field Marshal in the Turkish Army. German Jewelers produced high quality versions of the Iron Crescent. This Iron Crescent was made by the Berlin Jeweler J.H. Werner and is in amazing condition. The Order received the Honorary Title of the Gallipoli Star to commemorate the battle of Gallipoli in 1915 where British and Australian Troops landed on the Gallipoli Straits to conquer Constantinople and force the Ottoman Empire out of the war. They were repulsed by German and Ottoman troops suffering great losses. Multiple purchases can be combined for postal savings. See my other listings for an assortment of Great War items.
