Description: 6.25" x 11.5" matted autograph ensemble of the Hungarian born, Czech tenor. The autograph on an album leaf is dated September 7, 1919. The original photograph is as Rodolfo in La Boheme. Ready to frame! Marak like his fellow country person, Emmy Destinn, was one of the few Czech singers of the Golden Age to have international careers. Marak initially sung in Brno in 1899, moving to the Deutsche Theatre in Prague in 1900. By 1903, he was engaged by Gustav Mahler to sing at the Vienna Hofoper and Hans Gregor brought him to the Berlin Volksoper in 1906. He made his London debut in 1908, where he sung annually until 1913. In 1913, he signed up for the Chicago Opera for one season. He made guest appearances in Paris, Munich, Hamburg and Brussels. However, after 1914, his true home became the National Theatre in Prague. Sadly, Marak spent much of his later years in poverty, counting on his American friends to send him cigarettes. He sung there into the 1930’s and died in 1939. Marak made many records, which are well appreciated by 78 collectors. Will combine shipments, payment however, must be made at the close of the auction and you must advise us you intend to purchase additional items. Thank you!
