Description: Here is a beautiful old Japanese painting on paper signed Shunchō ga” (Katsukawa Shunchō?), a noted painter and illustrator of the Edo Period (1615-1868). Katsukawa Shunchō's paintings (active from about (1780 - 1800), were known to depict beautiful women and fashions of the day. I think this painting may be an artist copy, maybe from The Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting (now the Kyoto City University of Arts), founded in 1880. The subject is of a beautiful Courtesan being helped dressed by her two lovely maids, all dress in fashionable, brightly colored kimono's, where small details of the kimonos' design are painted with pigments of gold; an expensive inclusion. This original, signed unframed, Japanese painting measure approx.10" x 8.25” (25 x 22 cm). It is in very good antique condition with some minor blemishes and as seen in the pics.
