Description: Handsome antique lithographed map of pre-federation Australia in original hand color, with decorative scrollwork border, printed more than 155 years ago. The map labels the six original British colonies that united to form the Commonwealth of Australia on January 1, 1901: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Van Diemen Land (Tasmania). It locates hundreds of towns, settlements, and natural features, with a text key to identify counties within the six colonies. There is also a list of discoveries made by various explorers, including Tasman, De Witt, Edel, Hartog, and Flinders, and it locates the furthest points reached by Sturt in 1860 and Landesborough in 1861. Among the specific named places and features are Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobarton, Sydney, Cape York, Perth, Port Dalrymple, Gulf of Carpentaria, the Great Barrier Reefs, Burra Burra Mines, Jervis Bay, and a salt lake near Mt. Wilson in West Australia in which Sturt's Creek "is lost." It also shows a couple of Australia's earliest railroad lines, in Victoria, north and west of Melbourne, and in New South Wales, west of Sydney. The image area measures 32 x 38.8 cm [12½" x 15¼"], and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. There's a mileage scale below the title. The map was published by Johnson & Ward, New York in 1865 and is an original, authentic antique map, fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would make an impressive display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was printed. The Johnson & Ward firm was one of America's most esteemed cartographic publishing houses in the mid-19th century and a successor to J.H. Colton & Company. The maps were engraved on steel plates and then transferred to lithographic stones for printing, which resulted in a high quality product. Each map was then individually hand colored. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, with no marks, rips, or tears. There is letterpress text on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
