Description: Original German WWII Enamel Street Sign Maxtormauer Old Nürnberg City Walls. Item DescriptionOriginal Item: Only One Available. This is a late 1930s period steel and enamel sign in very good condition, it retains all of its color and character with scuff marks around the edges. Quite rare as most German enamel road signs were destroyed or American removed by soldiers after the fall of Germany at the conclusion of World War Two.This sign in the font of Fraktur reads Maxtormauer which is a street along the old city stone walls of Nürnberg. The Battle of Nuremberg was a five-day battle between the forces of the United States 7th Army on one side, and NSDAP Germany and Russian Liberation Army volunteers on the other during World War II. The battle saw some of the fiercest urban combat during the war and it took four days for the United States to capture the city. The battle was a blow to NSDAP Germany as Nuremberg was a center of the NSDAP regime. Many rallies took place in the city and to lose the city to the Americans took a heavy toll on already low German morale. Even though American forces heavily outnumbered the German forces, it wasn't until 20 April, that the 7th Army took the city center. The battle devastated the city. Sign measures approximately 31" L x 8" W. Makes a great backdrop and display piece. Not often encountered retaining with such a depth of blue in the background color.
