Description: Original 1981 Venice Simplon Orient Express Poster by Fix-Masseau This 1981 French Travel poster by Fix-Masseau (1905-1994) for the re-launch of the Venice Simplon Orient Express rail line. It features an image of Venice and its iconic gondolas. A cutout of the famous Lion of Venice statue from c300 BC frames the image. The artist, Pierre Fix-Masseau uses his signature art deco style which he developed throughout his long career beginning in the early 1930’s.The poster is printed on heavy stock paper and measures 38.25 x 24.25 inches. There is a roughly 9-inch tear in the bottom of the poster, a 3-inch tear at the top of the poster and some edge wear on the upper left-hand edge (all pictured). These issues will be able to be addressed when the piece is mounted and framed. The following text appears on the bottom of the poster “ Copyright 1981 Venice Simplon-Orient-Express inc., FIRST EDITION. Printed in France by Imprimerie”.Pierre Fix-Masseau was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. This experience greatly impacted Fix-Masseau, who continued to work within the Art Deco style for the remainder of his long career. Cassandre's interest in foreshortening, heightened focal points, and flattened planes can be seen in Fix-Masseau's works. Fix-Masseau combined Cassandre's influence with his own mastery of perspective and intricate detail to create his own, distinctive style.
