Description: Original Pencil Signed Etching by John Taylor Arms - Chartres Cathedral, 1934.Unframed but with New Acid-Free Mat. This is an interesting print. A hand written notation by the artist beneath the image reads: "Sketch, Chartres - proof from plate, drawn, etched and printed in two hours at the MacDowell Club in N.Y.C. January 10, 1934. John Taylor Arms" The MacDowell Club was an organization devoted to all forms of the arts and with John Taylor Arms being at theheight of his fame in the etching world, it's my guess that he was giving a lecture and a demonstration to a small group of enthusiasts. If this is true, this print would be one of a very small edition, limited to the number of attendees who wanted one. And since this lengthy notation was applied to this copy, it may have been one he kept for himself or as a gift to a friend. He couldn't have written this note on every copy he printed. Since this event occurred 90 years ago it's possible that by now, this may be the only copy still in existence. When I found this, it was framed but the frame was damaged and the mat soiled. I've cut a new acid free mat and hinged the print to an acid free backing. The plate size is: 6-7/8" x 4-7/8". Outside size of the mat is 9" x 12" Print is in excellent condition. There's a mat burn around the plate but it's covered with the new mat. The penciled notation is quite faint but I enhanced a scanned print. See my second pic. ___________________________________Inv.
