Often called "Violet Prickly Pear" and "Purple Prickly Pear", Redeye Prickly Pear and other common names, often billed as "Santa Rita" commercially as are several other varieties. Called Era, Eraka, etc. by the Tarahumara, Nopal de Castilla in Spanish in Mexico. There are many synonyms as the plant form varies greatly, with longer or shorter spines, black spines or even almost spineless, each variant recieving a name over the years, including Opuntia violacea, Engelm. in Emory, 1848, Opuntia chlorotica, Engelm. & J.M. Bigalow, 1856, Opuntia gosseliniana, F. A. C. Weber, 1902, Opuntia Snata-Rrita, Rose, 1909, Opuntia shreveana, C. Z. Nelson, 1919. Numerous natural hybrids between the varieties of these. This one we are confident is as the original 1848 named plant, closest to the wild types has the long spines on the mature pads. A native originally over a large range of the Sonoran Desert, Arizona over to New Mexico and Texas, south to northern Mexico. Nice fresh 3 to 5 inch clean cutting.
