There was much hard work to do just to keep the tribe fed. The tribe moved continuously over the plains in search of the buffalo needed for its meat and hides. The men hunted on foot, which made stalking and killing the large animals very dangerous. The women followed the men, carrying as much as they could on their backs. Even the children had backpacks to carry while they walked. Dog travois were used to carry larger loads and some of the older children held the ropes to keep the dogs in line. When twins were born into a Blackfeet family, usually only one baby was allowed to live: the boy, if the other baby was a girl. But Tall Woman begged Old Man to let both babies live and Old Man agreed. Tall Woman was careful to do her full share of the work so no one could complain about the twins. Twin Boy, later given the name Om-kas-toe, and Twin Girl carried loads on their backs too. And each held a dog in line while the people moved slowly across the valley floor. Swooping overhead was Wise Bird, a raven that Om had tamed. The Blackfeet believed that the raven was "good medicine" for the tribe. Boy and bird are inseparable and are continually stalked by danger and excitement. ...
