OLD Lithograph Poster LE THERMOGENE French Artist LEONETTO CAPPIELLO Fire Eater

Description: “Le Thermogene” color lithograph poster published by Dehon & Cie., Valenciennes, Paris and designed by Art Nouveau era artist Leonetto Cappiello. This is a medical / pharma advertising art piece notable for it’s wild imagery of the fire eater.This is one example of the type of artwork that people in the real life ‘art world’ seek. I’m unsure of the exact age since the poster was printed at different times and in various sizes over the years, but per other examples I saw online (one from a dealer and one from an auction house) that were this size, it seems to be from ca. 1930.Large poster laid on / mounted to (glued down to) foam core board measures approx. 46 3/4 x 31 1/2 inches. Not examined out of frame, so the foam core could be a little bigger than the sheet size (?), but I assume it has full margins. Good condition w/ minor staining upper left apparent.The current framing, including plexi and wood frame, will be removed and discarded prior to shipping. You’re buying the mounted poster only, with no framing. Ships UPS Ground, insured. For local pickup, you can of course have the poster with the framing.About the artist: “Leonetto Cappiello (9 April 1875 – 2 February 1942) was an Italian and French poster art designer and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called 'the father of modern advertising' because of his innovation in poster design. The early advertising poster was characterized by a painterly quality as evidenced by early poster artists Jules Chéret, Alfred Choubrac and Hugo D'Alesi. Cappiello, like other young artists, worked in a way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early norm”.The example of this poster in the Wellcome Collection (in London) is supposedly 117 x 78.5 centimeters, which I think is 46.063 x 30.90 inches, so a hair smaller than this example. Their poster, Wellcome Library no. 41333i, is marked the same as the example here: “V.175-P-20.490”.The Wellcome Collection seems to be indicating their example is from 1909. They cite references: William H. Helfand, "Historical images of the drug market: XXVIII", Pharmacy in history, 1990, vol. 32, pp. 176-177, M. Robert-Sterkendries, La santé s'affiche, Bruxelles: Therabel, 2003, no. 1024, p. 74, Jack Rennert, Cappiello: the posters of Leonetto Cappiello, New York 2004, no. 218.Another example of this poster was sold through Swann Galleries (Sale 2302, Lot 377) and was 46 x 30 1/2”. They didn’t date it, but cited references: Cappiello / Rennert 218 (Var), Cappiello 278 (Var), Cappiello / St. Vincent 4.30 (Var), Weill 210 (Var).I saw an example offered by Spencer Wiesz Galleries that seems to be the exact size as the poster offered here, and he writes that his is from circa 1930. A 30 7/8 x 46 3/4 inch example that went through Poster Auctions Int’l was also stated to be from ca. 1930, and had the same references / literature cited as Swann Galleries had cited, but without the term “Var”, which I assume means ‘Variant’.
