Description: I'm actually not sure what this is - a match safe seems the best bet. Nothing is missing; it is completely intact and in fine condition. The bottom troth looks like other match safes but it is tall with four "windows". It has an integral hanger, part of the smooth back. The carving has an unusual style of notching and a combination of layered and mosaic work. There is the remains of a soft yellow ochre wash. Really an excellent wall piece for a narrow space, or, it can safely stand. The top is open and always was. I just can't identify its purpose! It needs a good dusting - I leave that up to the buyer. Although the carving on both sides looks random, the mosaic elements actually make 8-pointed "asterisks". I have been buying, selling and collecting tramp art for many years but have never seen this form. It is about 11" tall. U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
