Description: the first American edition of the Swedish book "Nyama", renamed to "African Hunter" for English speakers.by Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, husband of Karen Blixen, a famous author of the time, who wrote "Out of Africa" which was turned into a movie. the two of them spent several decades living on-and-off in Africa, and Bror was one of the last great safari hunters, as colonialism, government regulations, war, dwindling animal populations, and subsequent animal conservation efforts cut into the continent and dulled its mystique. in this he recounts many of his encounters with animals of all types, including elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, buffalo, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, antelopes, etc. some he hunted, some he tracked or photographed, some he tried to keep as pets. he took many other famous and rich people along on safari and documentary shootings, as a trusted and experienced guide, and in return was taken on a offshore fishing expedition by Ernest Hemmingway, which is also included as a chapter. mostly anecdotes of the daring-do you'd expect from an old timey, big game hunter, but he also gives good detail of early conservation efforts & licensing laws, which was pretty interesting, as well as some insights into animal behavior and psychology, a pretty ridiculous story of him trying to cross the Sahara in a motorcar, cultural clashes between various native and European groups, and a little about the First World War as it reached Africa. book is about 7.5 x 5.5 x 1.5".284 pages, a couple dozen photographs. water damage. textblock and covers tight, no splits or missing pages. light general wear besides the water damage. see pics. check out my eBay store for more old and rare books from my personal collection.
