Description: This parachute was manufactured in March of 1960 and was used from March of 1963 through September of 1969 with the North Dakota Air National Guard's 178th Fighter Squadron. The parachute re-packing and inspection log is included, with serial number matching print on the chute with the number on the log book. 59-26534. The 178th Fighter Squadron during that period of time were flying the Northrup F-89 Scorpion, (1958-1966). The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, (1966-1969) and then the McDonnel F-101B Voodoo, (1969-1977). The parachute has actually been in my possession since 1971, when I purchased it from a fellow sky diver who had recently acquired it at a disposal/liquidation sale for unused military gear. Back then, the skydiving sport was almost exclusively made up of modified military parachutes. The main sources for the chutes were US Army or USAF. Parasails and such were none existent then. Modifying meant cutting two holes in the canopy behind the parachutist's harness and covering those holes with fabric but openable with a draw string to allow for a turn left or right depending on which hole you opened to allow air to pass through. If you opened both, it would give you maybe a 3 mph forward speed, but it also would increase your decent speed. I never got around to modifying this chute, so it has always been stored in our smoke free home. There is a bit of brown discoloration on a couple of suspension lines and there maybe a few grass clippings in the canopy as we just unfurled it to examine it a bit on our front lawn. A jump master was with me and he said the chute looked brand new. This is a true collector's parachute, as the military hasn't allowed these to be sold to the public in a functioning condition for many years and apparently was a "ride along" in some historic fighter aircraft. If you have questions about the parachute, please contact me.
