Notes of Possible InterestActor and Manager Charles Wyndham opened opened a group of 3 Theatres in central London in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these were the Criterion Theatre at Piccadilly Circus (lessee from 1875) Wyndham’s Theatre in Charing Cross Road (opened 1899) and, The New Theatre in St Martins Lane, behind Wyndham which opened in 1903).Charles Wyndham was knighted in 1902 and married Mary Moore in 1916. She was his leading actress from 1885 and partner in the ownership of the Criterion, Wyndham’s and New Theatres from the early 1900’sThe New Theatre opened in 2903. It seated nearly 500 people and is now a grade II listed building. It was built on an unused piece of ground behind Wyndham’s Theatre. During the 1920’s and 1930’s the theatre was managed by Sir Charles Wyndham’s son, Howard, and Mary More’s son (from her first marriage) – Bronson Albery. During this period renowned thespians such as Sybil Thorndike, John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans and Lauren Olivier performed at the theatre.The theatre was renamed the Albery Theatre in1973.
