Description: Up for sale here is this brand new replacement for the PA1002A IC chip. This chip frequently goes bad in vintage receivers and tuners such as the Pioneer SX-980, SX-1080, and SX-1280, and can cause you to lose one or both channels of FM. The chip has been discontinued for decades, and is impossible to find, but luckily some fine folks on Audiokarma designed a replacement for it. I have that replacement for sale here! This is a little circuit board that was designed as a drop-in replacement for the PA1002A. It will get your receiver or tuner working again. The only drawback is that you will lose the FM muting option, so you will hear static between stations no matter whether you have the FM muting on or off. However, it will get your tuner working otherwise. Installation is fairly easy--you will need a soldering iron, Philips screwdriver, solder, and some sort of desoldering device. I would STRONGLY recommend you replace all the electrolytic and tantalum capacitors on the board that has the PA1002A, or at least replace the ones that are surrounding the PA1002A. These chips often go bad due to shorted capacitors, so you need to replace the bad caps so the new replacement doesn't have issues. Installation is fairly simple, you just desolder the chip and install the board in its place. The board has pins 1&16 marked at one end and 8&9 marked at the other. On the PA1002A chip, pins 1&16 are at the left end and 8&9 are at the right end. You can use your service manual (available at hifiengine) to figure out the pin locations as well. The pins on the board are slightly fatter than the PA1002A chip's pins, so you will need to push and wiggle it a little, but it will go in fine. The board is slightly larger than the chip, so you may need to adjust the capacitors that surround it, but it's really not difficult. You can see what this looks like when it's installed in the SX-980--that's the last picture. If you have a channel out on FM only, and have a piece of gear that uses a PA1002A, it's fairly likely that the cause is this chip, but it's not guaranteed. I can't help you troubleshoot your tuner, but I would recommend recapping the tuner first and then going from there.
