NAVIS “SS TAIREA” (NM904) 1:1250 SCALE METAL MODEL PASSENGER CARGO VESSEL

Description: SS TAIREA was launched March 6, 1924. Built by Barclay, Curle & Co. at Whiteinch for British India Steam Navigation Company. She was the first of three sister ships built; her sisters were Takliwa and Talamba. With a weight of 7,934 gross tonnage and a length of 466 feet she had a capacity for 3,398 passengers. She was equipped with a twin screw 4 cylinder - triple expansion engine. And although she had three funnels, the third was a dummy. These three ships were one of the first to be registered in London instead of Glasgow. When her sisters joined her, they began a schedule of three times a month sailing to Japan for the British India Steam Navigation Company. Due to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, in 1932 Tairea was transferred to the Bombay east African run with her sister Takliwa. She remained on that route until November of 1939.With the outbreak of World War II she was converted at the British India workshops in Bombay into a Hospital ship with 506 beds and 120 Medical Staff. She served at Kismayu, Somaliland, Madagascar, Alexandria, Smyrna and at the landings at Sicily. In September 1943 she was at Salerno.In 1945 she was used to repatriate Prisoners of war from Hong Kong to India. She was the only ship of her class to return to British India. She was the first to see service on the Bombay - Durban route in 1946.In 1949 she returned to her original route from Calcutta to Japan and remained there until she was withdrawn from service. She made one trip back to the UK for scrapping. On April 1, 1952 she was sold to the British Iron and Steel Corporation and was broken by Hughes Bolckow Shipbreaking Co Ltd at Blyth.
