Description: In the Southern Transcontinental Service Case, National Airlines was authorized two separate extensions of Air Mail Route 39, providing Florida to California single-carrier service and replacing the National Airlines / Delta Air Lines / American Airlines interchange operations. The first segment extended from Houston, Texas via San Diego to Los Angeles, California; the second extended from Houston via Las Vegas, Nevada to San Francisco, California. The cachets were inscribed “Airmail Route 31” but service was actually part of Air Mail Route 39. This cover was carried on the June 11, 1961 inaugural Air Mail Route 39 flight from the San Francisco, California Airport Mail Facility to Houston, Texas (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 39SE25f. After offers from several other airlines, Pan American World Airways proposed to merge with National Airlines in August 1978. Formal agreement was reached by the two carriers one month later. Almost one year later the Civil Aeronautics Board gave tentative approval and, in October 1979, sent its order to President Carter. On December 22, 1979, the President approved the merger, and on January 7, 1980, Pan American became the owner of all remaining National Airlines stock. Complete operational merger of the two airlines did not occur until late in 1980.
