Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is a Famous Airplanes of the World (FAOW) Black Cover volume on an exceptionally capable Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft: FAOW #108 “CARRIER RECONNAISSANCE PLANE SAIUN” more commonly known in the West as the Nakajima C6N MYRT. Early experience in the Pacific war demonstrated the need for a long-range carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft, and Nakajima was instructed in early 1942 to develop an aircraft to meet this Imperial Japanese Navy requirement. Based on an airframe similar to Nakajima’s B6N, the prototype flew in mid-1943 with disappointing results. However, with a more powerful engine, the MYRT entered operational service in the summer of 1944 as a long-range reconnaissance aircraft that enjoyed almost complete immunity from Allied interception. By war’s end, 463 MYRTs had been built including a number that were used as night interceptors. The FAOW series began publication in the late 1960s and are highly illustrated monographs focusing on a specific aircraft or family of aircraft. Text is in Japanese, but the photographs, scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, cockpit diagrams, close-up detail drawings and profiles transcend the written word and have appealed to advanced aircraft modelers to this day. The formats and covers have slightly changed over the years. Originally, the FAOW covers were white and beginning in 1971, changed to Blue. In 1979, the FAOW covers changed to a chart or graph-paper background, and then in 1986, changed to the current Black Cover series (as is this one on the MYRT). This 111 page, 7.25 x 10.25 inch softcover, originally published in 1991, provides exceptional coverage of this important Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft, and condition of the book is LIKE NEW.
