Description: Musa velutina, aka Dwarf Pink Banana, is an ornamental species of banana native to India in the eastern Himalayas, and is a quite cold-hardy species. I used to grow it in zone 7a Tennessee, and it came back pretty reliably every year, as long as I gave it a few inches of mulch for protection in the winter. Now I live in zone 8b/9a Gainesville, Florida, and don't need to protect it. The clone I am growing now is from a sort of wild mat that was growing at the edge of the woods here in town, and was absolutely massive. You can see in my pictures about how tall it was (the first 5 pictures are the original mat, and the last 3 are from my yard). This mat was growing along the edge of a very small drainage ditch/creek/waterway that was sometimes dried up. I'm sure that the wet soil contributed to its very tall, incredible size, but it also has some good genetics. I'm standing flat-footed at 6'7" reaching up in the first picture. I'm sure that to the top of the leaves, it measured over 10' tall! Unfortunately, it no longer exists where it was...but not before I managed to procure a small piece of it to grow in my yard. The one in my yard has only been there for less than a year, so hasn't had a chance to reach the same proportions as the parent plant, but I can tell already that it's going to be a nice-sized plant. I'm offering seeds from my plant, but understand that there will be variations when starting plants from seed. However, since Musa velutina is self-pollinating due to its hermaphrodite flowers, seedlings should be very similar to the mother. The resulting fruits are self-peeling, to let you know when they are ripe, and sweet (but full of hard, black seeds). Musa velutina seeds are fairly easy to germinate, for a Musa species anyway. The important actor is freshness, and you really need some patience as well. Put the seeds in a bag or a box with a 70/30 - 50/50% mix of peat/perlite, and alternate bottom heat for 8 hours on at 95F, 16 hours off. If no results after a couple of months, turn the heat off completely for a few weeks, then back on again. Experiment with it a little. Keep the media moist, but not overly wet. Pot up seedlings soon after you see them sprout.
